Andrey "Mag" Chipenko, esports player and coach of
B8, has been banned by Valve for using Overplus in Dota 2. He admitted to using the program in the team's training matches to gather statistics.
He wrote about it on his Twitter page.
"Recently, due to my curiosity and foolishness, my Dota 2 account (over 50 thousand hours, including the entire item inventory) got a VAC ban. I accidentally heard from someone about a program called Overplus, became curious, and decided to download it and use it as an experiment during team training matches to get statistics on what opponents played in matchmaking over the past few days (so as not to copy the Steam ID and open the Dotabuff profile of each player separately, as I usually do every day to prepare for drafts)"
Mag emphasized that he did not use Overplus for unfair play but also admitted that it does not absolve him of responsibility.
"I NEVER used this program for dishonest play and DID NOT PLAY a single game with it; I simply deleted it on the same day later in the evening. Obviously, this does not relieve me of responsibility"
He underscored that he has been playing Dota 2 for 13 years, spending tens of thousands of hours in the MOBA, and is shocked that this oversight resulted in a lifetime ban. Valve recently conducted a massive ban of accounts for cheating, and numerous esports players received permanent bans due to Overplus.
