Dmitry Korb3n Belov, a manager for
Team Spirit has said that it is the proper season at the moment to create a league, however, he remains skeptical that Roman Resolut1on Fominok’s league will last long.
He made this opinion public during a stream on Twitch.
“It is a usual tale. Such leagues have existed countless times in the past. The first division is that part of pro gamers or recognizable n...es who are playing on t1 or t2 teams. Getting the first spot is flattering, but not such a big deal for them. The second division, on the other hand, has a 1,000, 700 or 500 prize pool, which isn’t enough to stimulate players. The simple reason is that players will still be matched based on their MMR. If this league becomes all-encompassing, it might use its own metrics, but to achieve that, it would need to become something like FACEIT”
Korb3n pointed out that due to griefers, account boosters, and other issues, the Dota 2 legend’s project has a chance might turn out to be another variation of the matchmaking. On the other hand, he found the prize pool too little for players and said that average queue times could reach 60 minutes, and that could push players towards standard matchmaking.
"There are indeed some problems with matchmaking at the present time. There are obvious griefers, boosters, bots, and what not, this is exactly the right time to introduce a league. There never was and never will be a better time for this. If this league does not get popular in the intervening period, then we can kiss goodbye to leagues ever being popular. The problem is that nobody will use FACEIT in Dota 2 because the game already has an MMR which at least lets you gauge how good someone is. The problem with such leagues is that you end up waiting one hour for a match, while others are waiting to gather. This after some time becomes irritating, especially when one can just go to MM, and press a button to find a game after five minutes"
The manager argues that if the EDL does not take its place in the pro scene now, the efforts of initializing other leagues later will be deemed as futile. The manager thinks however that there is a possibility of retaining professional players, if the league provides a competitive environment in which they can strive for the number one spot of being the best among all in the new system of rankings.
By the way, recently Resolut1on started his own Dota 2 league, which is aimed to create an alternative to matchmaking with a prize pool restriction to only $10,000.
