Yaroslav 'NS' Kuznetsov believes that Dota 2 and League of Legends are kept afloat by their established fanbase, but nowadays new games of this genre are doomed to failure.
The content maker shared a relevant opinion with viewers of a private Twitch broadcast.
"I get the impression, a certain feeling, that MOBA is some unique genre that wasn't destined to kind of become mainstream. As if it was supposed to be some niche thing all its life. But for some unknown reason, MOBAs have become just about the most popular games of the moment. That title has already gone from Dota a long time ago. From LoL, I actually think it's already gone too. But still.
I think they were very lucky to start becoming popular at the right time. I don't think either Dota or LoL would have become popular in the TikTok era, which is now. I mean if these games were coming out now in 2023, 2022 or 2021, they wouldn't have become popular simply. They were lucky enough to come out at the right time, in the right place, and earn a huge fanbase to still keep both afloat.
That is still old MOBA games exist due to a loyal huge fanbase, new games in this genre, I think, are already doomed to disaster."
Yaroslav 'NS' Kuznetsov also notes that the genre itself currently has a lot of problems, the main ones the streamer considers to be the need to constantly change and complicate the game, as well as the lack of phasing, such as the round system in online shooters. The fact that every action on the map at any moment has a strong influence on what happens on the map after 20 - 30 minutes of the match, content-maker highlights as a significant drawback of games of the MOBA genre.
Recall that earlier Yaroslav 'NS' Kuznetsov criticized Valve for the Immortal draft system because of the lack of an opportunity to choose your own position in matchmaking.
