The long-awaited The International 10 has already ended. The winners receive congratulations and are bathed in money and fame. Fans and viewers are happy, all viewership records have been broken. But there are those who look at the rest and only dream of high places in the main international Dota 2 tournament.

For ten years now, you can observe the success of teams from some regions, there are always favorites and outsiders, but some still cannot please their fans.

South America at The International 10

For South American teams, The International 10 was a complete failure and disappointment. Thunder Predator, which was remembered by the spectators at ONE Esports Singapore Major 2021 and SG esports that passed regional qualifiers, could not get out of the group and took the last places in the tournament. The Peruvian team was eliminated from the tournament even before the end of the group stage.

The region's top-1 team, beastcoast, soon followed after them, losing their first and only elimination match against Alliance. Result: 13-16th place.

That's all. The three strongest SA teams were simply unable to show at least some game at the world level.

And what was before

At the last The International, in 2019, Infamous turned out to be the best team in the region. These players are now in favor of beastcoast. K1, Chris Luck, Wisper, Scofield and Stinger, as in the last TI, showed the best result in their region. At The International 2019, they lost to Team Secret and finished 7th-8th.

Infamous TI9

It is also worth mentioning the participation of teams from SA in the ESL One Fall 2021 and OGA Dota PIT Invitational tournaments, which were held immediately before The International 10. But the results were no better there either.

The only pleasant surprise for the community was the performance of Thunder Predator at the first DPC tournament of the year - ONE Esports Singapore Major 2021. The Peruvian team skated through the entire group, losing only OB Esports x Neon and Vici Gaming one map each.

And although they later took only 5th-6th place, they got experience and many new fans around the world in addition to money.

Unfortunately, they were not on the Major in Kiev. Instead of them, according to the DPC rules, the aforementioned beastcoast passed to the tournament, who took the last place in the group and left home empty-handed.

Thus, the highest place that was taken by teams from the SA region became the top 8 from Infamous at TI in 2019. Infamous is the richest team in the region with $ 1,451,579 in prize money.

Reasons for failure

These results are explained by two factors: the geographical remoteness of the region from the rest of the world and, as a result, a critical lack of experience on the global esports scene.

Of course, players and coaches can watch the games of the top teams. But in fact, it is not possible to adopt experience and learn from stronger teams from another region during a face-to-face confrontation.

The COVID-19 epidemic has exacerbated the already difficult situation for teams from the region. The players remained completely cut off from the rest of the world. There was an opportunity to play only within the region and with a few teams from North America, where, in fact, only a couple of worthy teams remained. And EG, being the top team in North America, went completely inactive.

As a result: complete unpreparedness and backwardness of the region in terms of play.

We hope that the new transatlantic internet cable, which we wrote about in the article «Network issues appeared by global quarantine», will help the teams from the region to play more often on the servers of Europe and gain experience in matches against other, more experienced teams.
