DPC FAQ

How are DPC Points earned?
Points are earned by the top 6 teams playing in the Division I bracket of a Regional League tournament, as well as the top 8 teams of a Major tournament.

How Many Points are Majors and Regional Leagues worth?
For the 2021/2022 season, both Majors and Regional leagues will grant variable amounts of DPC points with the earlier tournaments granting less points than the later ones. The leagues are worth a total of 690/920/1150 points and the majors are worth a total of 1900/2700/3500 points.

How are Points distributed based on tournament results?
Details and information on Point distribution can be found in the Details section below.

Who owns a team slot?
The owner of the slot is the person who is registered as the admin of the team. In the case of a team organization, this generally is a manager or a person representing the organization. In other cases it can be the captain of a team, any specific player or a neutral third party.

Can a team change admin after creation?
Yes, an person that is an admin can transfer the admin to someone else at any point.

Can a team get acquired by an organization or a different organization?
Yes, a team roster can be transferred to a new team and a new admin.

How many teams will receive direct invites to The International 11 from DPC Points?
The top 12 teams with the highest point totals will receive direct invites to The International 11. The other invited teams will be determined by Regional Qualifiers. There is 1 Regional Qualifier tournament per Region.

Do points determine invites to The International Regional Qualifiers?
No - Any team that participated in the 3rd DPC Tour of the year will also participate in the Regional Qualifiers, as long as they don't replace more than 2 players from their 3rd DPC Tour roster.

Unlike previous years, there are no Open Qualifiers for The International 11. This is to prevent qualification shortcuts. However, all Regional Leagues will have an Open Qualifier tournament for their Division II spots meaning that the 3rd DPC tour's open qualifiers will essentially act as TI Open Qualifiers.

How many teams qualify for a Major tournament?
Each Regional League is guaranteed a minimum of 2 teams that will qualify for Major tournaments. Some Regions qualify 3 or 4 teams.

Are there other ways to qualify for a Major?
No - You can only qualify for a Major tournament by competing through a Regional League tournament.

Can a team play with subs?
Yes - During a Regional League tournament, a team can play with a sub for 4 out of the 7 matches. Any team that competes in a Major tournament with a sub will incur a 40% penalty on DPC Points earned from that tournament. A team that plays 5 or more Regional League matches with a substitute will be disqualified and any remaining games will be forfeited.

Can a team remove a player after qualifying for a Major?
Yes - However, a team that removes a player after securing a slot at a Major will incur a 20% penalty on DPC Points earned during that event, in addition to the normal player-removal penalty.

Can teams switch players during a Regional League Tour?
No. From the moment the roster lock starts until the end of the the Regional League Tour, the team is locked.

When do roster locks happen?
The initial roster lock for the 2021-2022 Season happens at 11:59am PT on November 21.

For subsequent Tours, player removals will lock at 11:59am PT on the Tuesday after the Major, though players will still be allowed to be added to incomplete teams until 11:59am on the following Sunday. This separation between drop-player lock and add-player lock is meant to prevent players from being dropped at the last minute, leaving them no time to join another team.

Rosters will unlock at the conclusion of the Regional League portion of each Tour.

Can we make roster changes when they're not locked?
Yes, though any player removals will incur a 15% penalty to all DPC Point earned at the time of removal. There is no penalty for adding a new player.

What is the format for Regional Leagues and Majors?
Information on Major and Regional League formats can be found in the Details section below.

What happens if a team doesn’t play their Regional League matches?
A team that doesn't play their Regional League Match forfeits it. A team that forfeits two or more matches in a Season will be automatically removed from the rest of the competition and all their opponents from previous and subsequent games will get a default win.

Can teams from the same organization play in the same Regional League?
Yes - However, as in previous years, only one team from an organization can qualify for The International. If two teams from the same organization qualify for The International, that organization must either remove all of their ties to one of the teams, or only the top team will be eligible.

Regional Leagues and Divisions

A Regional League is a round-robin-style tournament where professional Dota teams compete against one another to earn DPC Points and cash prizes. During this portion of the Dota Pro Circuit, collecting DPC Points is critical.

Teams competing in a Regional League tournament are divided into 6 global Regions. The global Regions are: North America (NA), South America (SA), Western Europe (WEU), Eastern Europe (EEU), China (CN), and Southeast Asia (SEA). Each global Region is considered a League of its own, and teams within each Region compete against one another round-robin style. Teams that win enough matches, and earn enough DPC Points, during a Regional League will then go on to compete in a Major tournament.

Within each Region, there are 2 Divisions. There are Division I teams, and Division II teams. Division I teams are generally considered of a higher skill level in comparison to Division II teams. However, teams can lose their way into Division II, or win their way into Division I during the tournament. Whether or not a team moves up or down a Division is up to how many matches that team can win or lose.

Within each Division, there are 8 teams. In total, across all Regions and Divisions, there are 96 teams competing in the Dota Pro Circuit.

At the end of each Regional League tournament, the bottom two teams from the Division I bracket will be demoted to the Division II bracket. The top two teams from the Division II bracket will then be promoted to Division I to take their place.

The bottom two teams from the Division II bracket will also be eliminated from the Regional League tournament. These teams will then be replaced by 2 new teams, which can qualify via an Open Qualifier tournament held within their Regional League.

Majors

A Major is an elimination-style tournament, where high performing teams from the Regional League compete against one another to earn even more DPC Points and cash prizes.

The 18 teams with a top placement in each Region’s Division I bracket compete in a Major. Each Region is guaranteed a minimum of at least 2 slots for teams to fill. However, some Regions are allocated more slots, as shown below:
  • Western Europe: 4 Slots
  • Eastern Europe: 3 Slots
  • China: 4 Slots
  • North America: 2 Slots
  • Southeast Asia: 3 Slots
  • South America: 2 Slots
The opening round of a Major functions like a best-of-two elimination tournament. This is referred to as a Wildcard format, which encompasses 6 teams. The top 2 teams from the Wildcard Stage progress into what is referred to as the Group Stage.

The Group Stage functions as a best-of-two, round-robin tournament. The top 2 teams from the Division I bracket then make it into the Playoffs Stage. The bottom 2 teams are eliminated. Remaining teams will duke it out in a Division II bracket elimination round.

The top, number 1 team from each Region doesn’t have to compete in the Group Stage - they get to go directly into the upper bracket of the Playoffs.
