Bogdan "Iceberg" Vasilenko stated that using Double Down MMR tokens could place a player in a hidden pool with a higher chance of losing, encouraging the user to purchase tokens again.
The esports player shared this assumption during a Twitch stream.
"I feel like when you buy Double Down, they throw you into a hidden pool and purposely push you towards losses so you’ll buy more. I can’t call it anything else. Seriously. Every time it's like this"
The player noted that buying and using the tokens supposedly places the player in a special pool where the chances of winning against the opposing team are lower. According to him, this situation encourages players to buy tokens again to recover lost MMR points.
Based on Iceberg's statement, he has experienced this himself and mentions noticing this pattern in matchmaking after using the tokens.
As a reminder, earlier Yaroslav "NS" Kuznetsov pointed out one of the major problems in Dota 2 that Valve still hasn't addressed.
