The biggest Dota 2 tournaments

Last updated:  Dota 2 tournament arena
Dota 2 is one of the favourite games among users. Fairly short matches, the competitive spirit and the balance of players at the initial stage made it possible to hold various tournaments and competitions on it. We will talk about the biggest ones.

History of tournaments in Dota 2

It is Dota 2 that most of all resembles tournaments that are held among ordinary sports disciplines. It competes in this respect with the League of Legends. However, we will talk about this game in another article.

Each match in Dota 2 can be significantly different from others. This is due to the selection of characters, the use of items, developed strategies and tactics. It requires taking into account a huge number of nuances for the team to emerge victorious.

The first big Dota2 cybersport tournament was hosted by Valve in 2011. Moreover, it was held even before the release of the game itself. It had an unprecedented scope, and the prize fund was 1.6 million dollars.

Now it is Dota 2 that sets trends in cybersports and increases interest in it.

How tournaments are held

In most cases, tournaments consist of two stages, where teams must qualify and get into the tournament bracket. Each tournament gives a pass to a bigger one. The International becomes the final one, where only the best get into.

Tournaments can be divided into several types:
  1. Leagues. There are high prize funds and a huge audience here. The leagues are divided into two tiers: the 1st division with the best teams in the region and the 2nd division, the teams that passed the open qualifiers but were not good enough to get into the 1st division. The prize money in the first division is 30 thousand dollars and a ticket to the Major. The winners of the second division receive $17,000.
  2. TI or majors. They are hosted by Valve with the support of tournament organizers. The Major has a large prize pool of 500,000, and winning it almost guarantees a ticket to the International. The prize fund of the previous TI was $18,930,775.
  3. Secondary or minors. They can also be called regional. Often held in the off-season by tournament operators or organizations. The main interest of the teams is the prize money, since these tournaments do not give DPC points.
  4. Amateur. Here, any team can start their journey to conquer. They are held online, and the prize pool is small. Often it is about 500-100 dollars.
If a player wants to break into cybersports, then they need to start with amateur tournaments. Information about them can be found on thematic forums or in social networks.

It is interesting to know. If you want to learn more about Valve tournaments, you should watch the company's documentaries. The first one was released in 2014 under the name Free to play. Since 2016, episodic films have been released under the general name True Sight. They are dedicated to the championships that have already taken place in past years.

Where to watch Dota 2 tournaments

Tournaments attract a lot of attention, that is why there are regular broadcasts from streamers now. Traditionally, one can watch them on Twitch. Some also broadcast on YouTube.

Note that until 2017, Valve banned unofficial streams. Now everyone can do it.

The largest YouTube channel is Dota 2 Tournaments. Not only broadcasts are held here, but also recordings of past matches. The channel also publishes the gameplay of the game, videos with cybersportsmen and other interesting content.
