Roman "RAMZES666" Kushnarev, offlaner for
Tundra Esports, stated that the winners of The International 2024 and the top teams will receive significantly less prize money than announced, as they will be required to pay taxes in Denmark, where the tournament is being held.
The esports player mentioned this during Alexander "Nix" Levin’s Twitch stream.
"The prize pool is already small, and now we have to pay taxes in Denmark. We're playing for the Aegis, right? Don’t even mention how much we have to give away in taxes. I’ll cry. Better not think about it. Just like what happened at EPL"
He reminded everyone that this year’s TI13 prize pool is the smallest in the history of Dota 2. He also noted that in Denmark, there is a tax on winnings, which is about 15% of $2,474,708. In other words, the champions of The International 2024 will have to pay around $167,041 in taxes, leaving the team with $946,569 in total.
RAMZES666 even joked that top teams will end up receiving prize money similar to that of a tier-2 tournament, as all participants of the Dota 2 World Championship will have to pay taxes.
It’s worth noting that the prize pool for The International 2024 has shown the worst growth in Dota 2 history, partly due to the Compendium 2024 not meeting player expectations.
