Yaroslav “NS” Kuznetsov believes that
Team Liquid would not have been able to take first place at The International 2017 if they had replaced Lasse “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen before the tournament.
The streamer shared his thoughts on Twitch.
“Without MATUMBAMAN, it's not certain that they would have won The International. Obviously, it would have been a different story.”
According to the streamer,
Team Liquid planned to replace the player before EPICENTER: Moscow 2017, which preceded The International 2017. However, the organizers of the first tournament insisted that there be no changes to the roster before the event, which indirectly helped
Team Liquid win TI, as a possible replacement could have greatly affected the team's form.
"There was this story, once
Team Liquid was supposed to come to EPICENTER. KuroKy, MATUMBAMAN, Miracle-, GH, MinD_ContRoL — these guys. I don't remember the details, but they wrote to the organizers a week or two before that they wanted to kick MATUMBAMAN and make a replacement, but they were forbidden to do so. They said, ‘No, if you kick him, we won't invite you,’ and they went with MATUMBAMAN. By the way, three months later, they won the International with MATUMBAMAN, just to remind you. The EPICENTER organizers won the International for them with their harsh decision to forbid any changes."
As a reminder, Jonas “SaberLight” Volek previously commented on the replacement in
Team Liquid at DreamLeague Season 26.
