Erik "Tofu" Engel, a player for
Gaimin Gladiators, criticized Valve for their treatment of Dota 2 and pointed out issues within the pro scene, where almost no new players are emerging.
He discussed this during an interview at BetBoom Dacha Belgrade 2024.
“For example, if you look at Europe, where there are German, Danish, and Dutch players, there are no new professional players. My friends, the younger guys—they almost all don’t play Dota. It’s not very popular. So I believe that the ‘player base’ of Dota has been dying for a long time, as there’s no good marketing, no hype around new heroes, or cool cinematic trailers. Patches are released lazily, and their release dates are unknown. Overall, there’s a lot missing”
The esports athlete admitted that many of his friends no longer play Dota 2 and that there are virtually no new players emerging in Western Europe. Tofu believes that Valve’s attitude towards the game plays a significant role in this, emphasizing that patches are developed lazily, and there’s no hype around new heroes, as well as a lack of promotion for Dota 2.
Nevertheless, the esports player hopes that the game will continue to thrive for a long time thanks to its huge fanbase, which, despite the existing problems, still enjoys it.
