Gabe Newell recounts how the story of Valve Corporation began

Gabe Newell said that his passion for video games led him to the idea of starting his own company to produce them. Through the development of Half-Life, he was able to express his own vision of how to improve the quality of games at that time.

“I liked video games. That made me think, ‘Oh, I could start a video game company.’ I was convinced that more interesting games needed to be developed. Half-Life was a kind of expression of those convictions.”

According to Gabe Newell, when he felt ready to implement his ideas, Valve was founded and began working on Half-Life to find solutions to improve the quality of game design. The head of the corporation admits that a mistake could have led to the need to return to work at Microsoft, which he did not want to allow.

“It seemed that I was ready to back up my words with actions. That's when we founded Valve. The ideas for Half-Life are the answer to the search for opportunities to develop something that would be better in terms of game design. If I had been wrong, I would have had to return to Microsoft.”
