The rating system in Dota 2 allows players to assess their skill level and track progress. This rating also determines the selection of players in matches, ensuring balanced teams.
What is MMR in Dota 2?
MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is a numerical rating system in Dota 2, designed to determine the level of gameplay skill of participants. Introduced in the game in 2013, the MMR system became the basis for forming teams in ranked matches. In November 2017, a system was introduced that divided MMR into two categories: solo and group rating. The growth or decline of MMR depends on the outcome of matches: a victory brings points a defeat takes them away. On average, for a win or loss, your rating will increase or decrease by 30 points in single mode and 20 points in group mode. As of 2023, the highest rating is 13,000 points, the lowest is 1. Most players have an MMR in the range of 2000 to 5000.

New ranking system after patch 7.33
After the release of patch 7.33, Dota 2 transitioned from the ELO system to the Glicko system. Unlike ELO, where MMR change was fixed (usually 25 points for a win or loss), the Glicko system takes into account various parameters:
Deviation: It depends on the player's activity. If a player hasn't played for a long time, the MMR loss and gain will differ from the standard.
Volatility: Determines the predictability of the match outcome. If you play against a strong opponent and win, you will gain more MMR.
Matchmaking at the 'Titan' rank level underwent separate changes. In matches between high-level players, captains have now been introduced, who can select players of similar skill levels for their team from a pool of 8 candidates. Moreover, a new parameter has been introduced in the game - confidence in the rating.
What is the rank confidence in the Dota 2?
With the new system, Dota 2 automatically assesses a player's match to their rating based on experience and match outcomes. The more a player participates in ranked matches, the more accurately the system will determine their level. After the new system was implemented, all accounts underwent calibration. If a player doesn't play for a long time, their rating confidence decreases to prevent a negative experience for other players upon their return.

What is calibration?
Calibration is a process that allows the system to assess the skill level of each player for the correct assignment of rating level and MMR points. Calibration takes place in the game every season.
At the beginning of the ranked season, players can recalibrate their rating. To do this, they need to play ten recalibration matches, after which their new MMR will be displayed. During these matches, the amount of MMR you can gain or lose per match will differ from the standard 30 MMR and will be based on your in-game performance. If a player hasn't logged into the game for a long time, the system will automatically initiate recalibration and reset the rating of all players to assess the gamer's playing capabilities.
Leaders in MMR
In most regions, the top positions in the Dota 2 ladder are occupied by professional esports players. Most of these leaders have MMR ratings significantly exceeding 12,000, but increasingly, pro players are reaching the 17,000 MMR mark, which was once considered incredibly high.

The current record holder is Ilya "Yatoro" mulyarchuk, former carry of
Team Spirit, who became the first in the world to surpass the 16,000 MMR mark, setting a new Dota 2 record.
Nevertheless, the number of players with a rating above 15,000 is rapidly growing, and more than 10 players from the top of the European Dota 2 ladder have already surpassed this milestone.
