China has halted live broadcasts of certain matches at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022 due to internet addiction concerns. Platforms like Tencent and Huya were instructed to stream only the semifinals and finals of multiplayer games such as Honor of Kings and League of Legends.
This decision bewildered China's vast 400 million esports enthusiasts. However, the "Honor of Kings" semifinal between China and Thailand was aired on platforms including CCTV, Huya, and Tencent.
At this year's Asian Games, esports competitions are recognized as an official medal event for the first time. While gaming has faced scrutiny from regulators, competitive gaming is viewed as a legitimate sport.
