Within the continuous development of VALORANT, one cannot pass by the unique stories behind the creation of each map. Today, let's explore the history of Ascent, one of the initial gaming locations that has become a beloved favorite among many gamers.
The development team shared information on the official PlayValorant game website.
Commencement of Ascent VALORANT Map Development
At the very beginning of the process, the design team was defining the primary goals and constraints for the future Ascent map. The concept of Ascent included the creation of a classic tactical location with three attack directions, utilizing mechanical doors to close passages. Here, in the conceptual stage, plans for the map, top-down views, and initial 3D models for the engine were born.

Greybox Stage
The subsequent phase of map creation was termed the "greybox" stage. It was during this period that the map started taking its initial shape. Months, and sometimes years, were devoted to creating a rough model, integrating essential game elements, and testing new mechanics. Ascent became a platform for experimenting with various concepts and solutions before developers deemed it ready for the next phase.
Three Years of Development and Draft Versions of Ascent Map
Being one of the first maps in VALORANT, Ascent underwent a lengthy development journey. Over three years, the development team consistently optimized the impact of abilities on gameplay, worked on the storyline, and aligned the map with the ever-changing dynamics of the game.
The "draft versions" stage was pivotal in shaping the appearance of the map. Developing the concept of graphic design, resolving remaining questions, and handing the map over to the art department all demanded careful attention and meticulous work. Inspired by medieval Italy, Ascent began to take on a modern form and acquire its unique style.
Art Department's Work
The artists took on the responsibility of bringing the concept to life. From creating background sounds to shaping the unique atmosphere of different locations, the artistic process spanned no less than six months. An essential part of this process was the creation of the "empty zone" – an area left without additional details to ensure visibility of agents and comfortable gameplay.
Florescent VALORANT
While delving into the history of the Ascent map, it's impossible not to mention the esports star Florescent VALORANT. The legendary Ava Eugene, representing the Shopify Rebellion team, is considered one of the strongest players on this map.

Completion of Ascent VALORANT Map
Placing special elements such as statues and frescoes required meticulous planning. Five years of work resulted in the creation of the Ascent map, which underwent numerous changes and became an integral part of the VALORANT gaming experience. However, at the time of release, the project's work was not finished. In patch 1.02, developers simplified interaction with certain map angles. The team continues to work on further improvements to make the gaming experience even more captivating for every gamer.
