Valve has changed the rules for The International 2024 and banned in-game advertising from team sponsors, which could significantly impact player funding.
The developers announced on Steam that in-game advertising in player nicknames, as well as banners during TI13, is now prohibited.
This decision could lead to dissatisfaction among team sponsors and even a reduction in funding for the rosters that qualified for the Dota 2 World Championship. Advertising in player nicknames and team base banners was one of the main avenues of cooperation between pro teams and sponsors.
Valve's decision is likely to affect the funding of teams that qualified for The International 2024 but are not tournament favorites. Since this is one of the main forms of collaboration with sponsors, the losses for some teams could amount to millions of dollars.
Previously, Valve surprised the Dota 2 community by suddenly changing the rules for The International 2024, introducing a new ban for the World Championship.
