Cache returned to CS2: what changed on the map

Valve brought Cache back to CS2 in an updated version, reworking the visuals and partially changing its atmosphere. The map was added to Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch and Retakes modes, however it’s still unknown if it will replace any map in Active Duty — it is expected this could happen with the start of Premier Season 5 after the IEM Cologne 2026 Major. The gameplay overall remains familiar, although some elements were adjusted
Main changes on the map
The updated Cache received a number of reworks — both visual and gameplay:
Full visual remaster on the Source 2 engine. Textures, lighting and shadows were rebuilt from scratch, the map looks more modern and detailed
Changed atmosphere. The “green” mossy tone of the 2019 version is gone — the new Cache has a cleaner, more industrial look with a Chernobyl-style aesthetic
Reworked key areas. A site (Forklift) and B site got updated cover geometry and more readable sightlines
New small environmental details. Posters, graffiti, trash and other elements were added, making the locations feel more alive
Better optimization for modern PCs. Unlike the “green” 2019 version, the new Cache runs more stable and doesn’t load the system as much
Core structure preserved. Mid, A Main, B Halls, Checkers — everything is still in place, classic timings and angles remain recognizable
What was removed from the map
Not all changes were liked by players. The graffiti dedicated to Aleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev was removed from the map. Previously, one of the walls featured his ESL One Cologne 2016 highlight, where he hit a famous AWP no-scope mid-air. Now there are just regular posters that fit the overall map style
The reason for removing the graffiti is unknown. Shaun “FMPONE” Snelling — the original creator of the map — did not comment on the changes publicly. It’s worth noting that in May 2025 he officially sold the rights to Cache to Valve, so now all decisions about the map are made by the developer
What else in the patch
Along with Cache return, the April 28, 2026 update also brought other changes:
On Dust II Mid Box (Xbox) was reopened — the jump spot that was previously blocked. This time, as noted in the patchnotes, “intentionally”
On Office, collisions of the tarps on boxes near CT spawn were fixed
Workshop maps Stronghold and Poseidon were updated
Knife animations for Talon and Karambit were improved in the Animgraph 2 system
Overall, the updated version of Cache kept its structure but received a modern look — this should bring it back into the pool of popular CS2 maps and possibly into Active Duty in the next season
